Why Our Pastéis de Nata are Perth’s Favourite Portuguese Dessert
If you’ve ever been to Portugal — or simply love Portuguese
food — then you’ll know that Pastéis de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tarts) are hands-down the most iconic dessert.
A perfectly flaky, golden pastry shell surrounds a silky-smooth egg custard, delicately infused with cinnamon, and baked in a hot oven until the top caramelises into that signature glossy finish.
The hallmark of a great Pastel de Nata? A custard that’s luxuriously creamy yet firm, nestled in a crisp, buttery pastry that holds its form from the first bite to the last.
Traditionally, these tarts are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, sprinkled with a little canela (cinnamon) or icing sugar. In Portugal, they’re often paired with a bica — a short, strong espresso— but they go just as beautifully with your morning cappuccino.
